St Albans Prison cannot confirm nor deny Jayde Panayiotou's killer has access to internet

JULY 2, 2015

The Department of Correctional Services on Thursday could not confirm nor deny reports that emerged in local media that the alleged triggerman in the abduction and killing of Port Elizabeth teacher, Jayde Panayiotou, Sizwezakhe Vumazonke, could be accessing his Facebook account whilst at the St Albans Prison - which means he has access to the internet against prison rules.

"We cant deny that he might be having access to a cellphone or even his friends who might have access to his social network," St Albans Area Commissioner, Mandla Jam, told local radio station, AlgoaFM.

He maintains that daily checks are done at St Albans prison for illegal contraband - including cellphones and other devices.

"On a daily basis we search for phones and confiscate them, but because there are offenders who work outside and sneak them in. We still search them daily."

Meanwhile, Christopher Panayiotou's, attempts to appeal a decision by Magistrate Abigail Beeton no to grant him bail, which was set to be heard this week, could have suffered a major delay.
