Stage one load shedding at 4pm

JUNE 24, 2015

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has announced that stage one load shedding will be introduced from 16h00-22h30 for Wednesday due to ongoing maintenance.

Speaking at a public meeting held by the National Energy Regulator South Africa (NERSA) in Johannesburg yesterday, Acting Eskom CEO Brain Molefe said that the approval of a 25.3% hike in electricity tariffs would help the struggling state-owned parastatal keep the lights without having to spend millions on buying diesel.

“We’ll calculate costs that are prudent and our tariffs will be based not on what our desires for profits are, but on what is necessary for us to cover costs. And that is why we are here, praying, that you [Nersa] give us the money to cover the costs of diesel,” Eyewitness News (EWN) quoted Molefe as saying.

In an interview with EWN, energy expert Chris Yellend said that the power utility could very well resorted to buying diesel for the remainder of the current financial year as more viable alternative sources continues to be developed.
