Standard Bank investigates Monday's system glitch - extends operating hours

AUGUST 4, 2015

Standard Bank South Africa on Tuesday morning said that is investigating the exact cause of a hardware glitch that disrupted some of its services on Monday.

For much of the day, customers experienced problems with the bank's mobile app and internet services as well as some branches that were offline.

"We are currently experiencing technical issues on our online channels. Internet Banking and our App banking platform is currently not available. Some of our services at our Standard Bank branches are also impacted. You can still perform transactions at any of our ATM’s and point of sale devices.

"We would like to apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused, and would like to assure our customers that everything is being done to restore services as quickly as possible," the ank said in a statement on Monday.

On Monday evening, the bank announced that "all technical issues affecting clients from this morning have now been resolved and all services are working fully".

"We will be extending branch operating hours to 5PM over the next few days, to address the backlog."

Spokesperson Funeka Montjane says they've had to recover data from their hardware.

“The hardware is the heart of the bank.

"It stores data and enables customers to transact. Essentially because the integrity of the data is the most important thing in a bank we needed to make sure that we recover it in a way that it doesn't compromise that.”
