Stanford Road closed and Booysen Park under lock down - drivers cautioned

SEPTEMBER 14, 2015

Port Elizabeth police late Monday afternoon advised motorists that the service delivery protests that began in Booysen Park, in the morning, were still ongoing. Stanford Road and other roads leading into the suburb are closed.

Drivers have been advised to take caution.

In the morning, police fought running battles with protesters, who torched an Algoa bus and damaged another one.

The residents had also blocked all roads leading to the suburb with burning tyres and rubble. They also threatened to burned down public property if their demands are not met. Among the residents' grievances is a demand for houses.

Police had to use water cannons, teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, who responded with petrol bombs.

Around lunchtime, police had managed to reopen Stanford Road to traffic.
