STATUES EFFED Part 5: Security around historical statues

APRIL 7, 2015

Policing has reportedly been beefed up around the Nelson Mandela Bay's historical statues and memorials following the vandalising of the Uitenhage Anglo Boer war and Port Elizabeth’s Horse memorial, by people thought to be Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members.

An elderly man was arrested, but later released for allegedly damaging the Horse Memorial where Cape Road meets Russell Road in Port Elizabeth.

EFF deputy chairperson for the Nelson Mandela Bay region, Bo Madwara, confirmed that the local EFF chapter was behind the setting alight of the Uitenhage statue.

“Unfortunately we could not topple the statue, as the police came and stopped us,” he said last week.

Madwara said the Uitenhage war memorial was just the tip of the iceberg.

“The EFF has a programme in Nelson Mandela Bay that will seek to destroy all colonial statues that have been identified,” he said.

Nelson Mandela Municipality spokesperson, Roland Williams, said the attacks are nothing more than brazen hooliganism.

He said that there are processes in which people can voice their concerns or lobby to government to remove any particular statue - warning that resorting to criminality will not be tolerated.

"We are in constant interaction with the police. The Leadership assured me that there will be extra policing in the respective precincts of where some of these statues are situated," he said.

Meanwhile, the EFF in the Eastern Cape denied toppling the 110-year-old Horse Memorial but said it applaudes the action.

“We are not aware that any of our members did that but we do not condemn it. In fact we applaud it because we have now taken a decision that all these statues must come down,” said Simcelile Rubela, the party’s Eastern Cape co-ordinator.
