Stormers to “parade” Currie Cup trophy
The DHL Western Province Stormers will be parading their “newly acquired” ABSA Currie Cup trophy through the streets of Cape Town on Tuesday, club President Thelo Wakefield said.
Province beat the Xerox Golden Lions 19-16 in the Currie Cup final at Newlands on Saturday, making it their 33rd competition victory.
The trophy is also said to travel to Gugulethu before being handed over to Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille, on Wednesday.
Wakefield added that the trophy parade will be tribute to the people of Cape Town, showing that that the win was for the city and its people.
Earlier this season, he demanded that the side win the Currie Cup after a weak performance in this year’s Super Rugby season, which saw them finishing 11th.
He added that Coach Allister Coetzee’s position, as senior professional coach, was being evaluated by Director of Rugby, Gert Smal. In an interview last week, he however stated that Coetzee would not be “sacked” if the trophy was to come to Cape Town.
