Strike action to cripple MTN

A reported 3 000 members of the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) are expected to go on strike tomorrow over failed wage demands at telecommunications giant, MTN.

The strike, which was announced over the weekend, will reportedly shut down a range of the company’s operations with the union also threatening to carry out a similar protest against Telkom.

Workers are demanding a 10% salary increase, the promotion of temporary staff to a permanent positions and a 16% increase in bonuses.

“It will be the first strike at MTN. It will be one of the biggest. We are even in critical places, we are entrenched in there,” CWU President Clyde Mervin was quoted by Independent Media as saying, before adding that consumers can expect their network to go down tomorrow.
