Student warder and friend arrested for mandrax possession at St Albans prison

A 23 year-old Port Elizabeth student warder and her friend are in custody after they were busted on Saturday at the living quarters of the St Albans Correctional Facility with drugs.

According to Port Elizabeth police; "Members followed up on information received and the couple was found in possession of 400 mandrax tablets."

The two were expected to appear in court on Monday on a charge of possession of drugs.

Over the weekend, officers conducting Operation Lockdown duties also confiscated 71 packets of tik, one 9mm pistol, one toy gun, one gas gun, one pellet gun, 407 mandrax tabs, 72 rolls of dagga and a Mazda Sting in other operations.

"Since the start of Operation Lockdown in March 2016, the intervention units deployed in the areas of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp has made significant inroads and several suspects as well as illegal firearms and ammunition is confiscated on a daily basis," Port Elizabeth police said.

"To date, 74 firearms have been confiscated."
