Survey shows South Africans have lost faith in Zuma

BY CHARL BOSCH - NOVEMBER 25, 2015

A new survey conducted by ratings and research agency, AfroBarometer, has found that 62% of all South Africans disapprove of President Jacob Zuma’s current performance in office.

The survey, based on the statements of 2 400 adults interviewed between August and September this year, found that only 36% of South Africans were satisfied with the president’s current showing, versus the 64% he received in 2011.

It also revealed that the majority of South Africans favoured former President Thabo Mbeki with an approval rating of 63% from 2000-2006, compared to Zuma’s 50% from 2011-2015. Mbeki’s individual showing also ranked higher than Zuma with an approval rating of 77% in 2006, in contrast to the aforementioned 64%.

Zuma’s disapproval level further increased on a SADC level with 62% versus the 60% of Malawian President Peter Mutharika, Madagascar’s Hery Rajaonarimampianina (59%), and recently elected Lesotho Prime Minister, Pakalitha Mosisili (46%).

On a national level, South African’s trust in Members of Parliament dropped from 54% in 2011 to 42% in 2015, while Premier approval over the same period dipped 1% from 54% to 53%. Among the provinces, leadership performance during 2015 ranked the highest in KwaZulu-Natal with an approval rating of 56%, followed by Mpumalanga (50%) and the Eastern Cape (39%).

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille was rated as the best performing Premier with 62% ahead of KwaZulu-Natal leader Senzo Mchunu (60%), and Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha (59%).
