Suspect arrested with abalone worth R1 million

Western Cape police on Monday morning arrested a 26-year-old suspect with abalone worth an estimated R1 million.

“Early on Monday morning, members from the Cape Town K9 Unit responded to information of a vehicle allegedly transporting abalone from Buffelsjag to Cape Town and conducted patrols in the vicinity of the N2 freeway,” the police said in a statement.

“At approximately 06:00 they spotted the vehicle, a silver BMW 320 sedan and pulled the vehicle from the road at the intersection of the N2 freeway and Victoria Road, Somerset West.

“Upon searching the vehicle the members recovered 15 bags of shucked abalone.

“The driver, a 26 year old man from Gordon`s Bay, was arrested and taken to Somerset West SAPS for detention where the abalone was counted by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

“It amounted to 1 958 units with a street value estimated at approximately R1 million.”
