Suspect nabbed in killing of Fort Beaufort policeman

SEPTEMBER 9, 2015

A task team led the Hawks have reportedly arrested a 34-year old suspect in connection with the murder of a Fort Beaufort police sergeant over the weekend.

In an interview with Algoa FM, police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the man was arrested in Queenstown on Tuesday with the search continuing for his accomplice. The men are suspected of shooting dead Sergeant Xola Sowambi on Saturday morning in an apparent hi-jacking while he was heading to work.

Sowambi's body was found on Sunday morning in an orange field next to the R67 between Fort Beaufort and Seymour with a single gunshot wound to the head. Hours before, police seized his Volkswagen Polo at a roadblock in Whittlesea after it was abandoned by the suspects who had noticed police. A laptop believed to have stolen in a hi-jacking in Hogbacks days before, was found in the car.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Queenstown Magistrate's Court later this week.
