Suspected gas leakage at Coega IDZ's BPO Centre

The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) on Wednesday received reports of an alleged gas leakage at its Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centre.

"Staff at the BPO centre was asked to vacate the premises and the area was temporarily cordoned off, however it has since been opened for utilisation," said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, Head of Marketing and Communications at Coega Development Corporation, in a statement.

He said that at this stage it is unclear what the cause of the alleged leakage is and the CDC SHEQ unit and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality (NMMM) were on the scene to investigate the incident.

"An incident report to the alleged gas leakage at the Discovery BPO centre will be made available, upon request, as soon as it has been finalised."

Vilakazi assured that the CDC performs maintenance of buildings, particularly air-conditioning facilities every second month in accordance with the CDC’s facilities and SHEQ management and policies.

"Furthermore, the CDC adheres to international best practices and the organisation has dedicated time and resources to ensure that it obtains various ISO certifications, specific to safety and health as indicated below:

"Among the many ISO certificates CDC obtained the OHSAS 18001 - Occupational Health and Safety. This Standard demonstrates the organisation’s readiness/ ability to control its Occupational Health and Safety performance risks and improve its performance," he said.

"In addition, the CDC has ISO 31000 - Risk Management certificate, which demonstrate excellence in a wide range of activities, including, operational processes, functions, projects, products, services and assets.  It is applied to any type of risk, whatever its nature, whether having a positive or negative consequence.

"Additional ISO certifications that have been obtained by the CDC are as follows: ISO 9001: 2008 – Quality Management; ISO 14001 - Environmental management; ISO 27000  - Information Management (ICT); ISO 20000 - Information Technology –Service Management; ISO 16001 : 2007 - HIV & AIDS."
