Suspected thief shot dead at Butterworth petrol station

Butterworth police have confirmed the death one person and the arrest of another believed to have been responsible for an armed house robbery in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

In a statement, police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said that the two suspects broke into a house on a small holding in the Sardinia Bay area before holding up a domestic worker at gun point and making off with firearms and electronic equipment.

Both men were later traced to Butterworth where a shootout with police at a petrol station on Wednesday afternoon, resulted in the death of a 31-year old suspect. His 28-year old accomplice is expected to appear in court soon on a charge of armed robbery.

Mills stated that police recovered the missing electronics as well as two handguns believed to have been used by the suspects. The possibility of further arrests being made has not been ruled out.
