Suspects arrested for illegal firearm and ammunition

Two suspects, who cannot be named yet and aged 25 and 30, are expected in a Port Elizabeth court on Wednesday after they arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition by officers from the Mount Road police cluster on Monday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra van Rensburg said that police were investigating if the suspects or the firearm had been involved in prior crimes ahead of their court hearing.

Meanwhile, police conducting Operation Lockdown duties in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas, over the past weekend, also arrested six suspects again for unlawful possession of firearms.

The proliferation of illegal firearms is huge challenge in South Africa, where most of these arms often surface at crime scenes.
