Suspects arrested with firearms in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp

Six suspects were arrested and two firearms confiscated in two separate incidents over the weekend. They face charges related to the unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

"Gelvandale police were [on Sunday] morning responding to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in Liebenberg Street when the arrests were made," police said.

"As the members were following the vehicle, the driver and passenger jumped off and tried to run. A police officer saw the passenger drop a firearm."

A 9mm pistol with two rounds of ammunition was recovered and a 29-year old suspect arrested.

The firearm was reported stolen in Bethelsdorp ealier this month.

On Saturday night, five suspects, aged between 17 and 25 years, were arrested by Bethelsdorp Vispol members.

"While patrolling ext 31in Bethelsdorp, members noticed a Toyota Corolla with five occupants," police said.

"Due to the number of people in the car, the officers decided to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was cornered in Biscuit Street. The driver was seen opening the door and dropping a firearm."

All five suspects were detained on unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

An Astra pistol and 8 rounds were seized.

The Toyota Corolla was also confiscated.
