MARCH 18, 2015

Three men, aged between 22 and 29, were arrested by the Mthatha flying squad for possession of an unlicensed R4 rifle with 32 rounds of ammunition, on the N2 road near Walter Sisulu University, on Monday morning, Eastern Cape police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Police were following up on information they received about unlawful possession of a firearm, when they found an R4 rifle hidden under the back seat of a silver grey Mazda 2.

When circulating the firearm, it was found out that it was not reported stolen and that it belongs to a Nqabeni Khalipha from Ikwezi township, in Mthatha.

The motor vehicle which belonged to one of the suspects' brother was also confiscated.

The firearm will be sent for ballistics to establish whether it cannot be linked to other criminal activities.

The suspects appeared before Mthatha Magistrate Court on Tuesday facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They were granted R800 bail each and the case has been remanded for 23 June 2015.

The owner of the firearm will be charged on the later stage for negligence.
