Team SA Rio 2016 Olympics Update

BY JESICA SLABBERT - AUGUST 16, 2016

South Africa on Monday did not manage to grab any new medals since Wayde van Niekerk’s record breaking victory on Sunday. He currently holds the country’s only gold medal.

Still, Wenda Nel managed to secure a spot in the Women’s 400m Hurdles semi-finals, while L.J. van Zyl secured a spot for the Men’s 400m Hurdles semi-finals.

Bridgitte Hartley did very well in the Women’s kayak single 200m. Unfortunately, she did not manage to qualify for the finals. She will, however, be competing in the consolation finals later on Tuesday.

As of Monday, South Africa’s ranking has dropped from 24th to 31st. Winning an additional gold medal could substantially boost the country’s ranking.
