THE GOOD-FOOD STORE: A nice place to
Valley Harvest Bistro and Shoppe, located in Port Elizabeth’s leafy Walmer suburb is a place where you can unwind, relax and enjoy your lunch hour without interruption.
Should Valley Harvest have been located elsewhere, it would easily have been an organic farm stall, a health shop or a café; but at its current location it is rather a unique combination of all the above in a well-conceptualized good food shop.
Bistro seating is either inside, with chandelier lighting and soft music in the background, or outside on a veranda or beneath the shade of old, characterful trees.
In the past 4 years the menu remains simple, fresh and exploding with flavour and detail to health. Besides superbly presented dishes, there are also gluten-free options as well as vegetarian meals. I found the place a wonderful place to just be.
I particularly enjoyed the ‘Salmon on Essene’ bread - a wholesome sprout bread, ideal for the health-conscious person. Alternatively, the bistro offers a big ‘Boere’ breakfast, delicious cakes, muffins, quiches, wraps and the barista John serves top class coffee.
Valley Harvest is also famous for its Thai chicken and butternut curry - a must!
I found the Bistro section ideal for private business meetings (offering free Wi-Fi), small intimate parties and a good place to catch up on the latest gossip with your friends. Breakfasts and light lunches are served from 8am till 4pm during the week and they are also very popular over weekends.
After my lunch, I ambled into the Valley Harvest Shoppe where I found several healthy products, organic foods and fresh farm produce, including raw nuts and seeds, on offer. They also stock a wide selection of spices, vegan-friendly and gluten-free products.
The Shoppe offers gluten-free pizza bases, wraps, muffins and quiches. If they don’t have what you are looking for they will try their best to source it for you. I learnt that the Shoppe recently started stocking Miss K nutritional ice-cream, Nature Naturally baby food and beetroot juice is on its way from the UK.
What’s more, Valley Harvest Bistro and Shoppe has regular customers who bring with them thier four legged friends to dine outside. To top it all any of the meals are available as a take-a-way including the delightful, specially blended coffee.
