THE PADLANGS WAY: Much more than a roadside stopover

After an enjoyable weekend in the Baviaanskloof, we stopped for refreshments at the ever charming and popular Padlangs Country Restaurant and shop which is located 7km from Patensie.

Overlooking the beautiful citrus orchids and the Kouga Mountains, Padlangs invites travellers to relax and dine in a rustic yet elegant setting. The shop is packed with a variety of items ranging from homemade jams, preserves and rusks, to biscuits, nougat, biltong and even enamelware, décor and gift items, children’s toys and local farm produce.

We soon found a table under the shaded veranda and our waitress was on hand with our menus.  There are a wide variety of country delights to choose from such as venison pie, heavenly lamb shank, curried pineapple, tender steaks, wraps, home baked roosterkoek and the famous Patensie potato chips which are harvested across the road and served freshly fried. The Sunday carvery is very popular so
book a table to avoid disappointment

My husband and I ordered the beef burgers served with Patensie chips while my daughter - who is an expert on homemade pies - went straight for the Baked Chicken Pie with salad and chips. Cool Soda Floats were the order of the day and cooled us down in the Patensie heat.

While waiting for our food to arrive, we strolled through the shop gathering up on homemade items and nic-naks to take home. There is also a kiddie’s play area outside to entertain the little ones which is a nice distraction while Mom browses in the shop. It was not long and our food arrived piping hot and perfectly presented. As always the food was delicious and the fresh, country tastes and homemade quality shone through.

Padlangs is fully licensed and open seven days a week as well as on Public Holidays from 08:00 am to 16:00 pm. Breakfasts are served until 11:00 am daily as well as high tea served in bone china with wonderful baked delights.

Host and owner of Padlangs, Heidi Schellingerhout-Muller has once again outdone herself by recently starting up her own function and wedding venue called “Die Grand” located diagonally across from Padlangs.

Die Grand can cater for up to 100 guests. This unique venue offers all the modern amenities available in the Eastern Cape but at very affordable prices. My philosophy, Heidi says, “is to provide an unforgettable and stunning wedding that does not cost an arm and a leg”.

This venue is a one stop shop. From the organising of the food, décor, flowers, tables and chairs, Heidi and her team are hands on.  They will ensure that brides do not have to lift a finger and can experience a stress free wedding. Heidi wants the couple of the moment and their guests to have a most enjoyable event. To add to this special venue, there is an old NG church situated only a few metres away.

So whether you are taking a drive into the country or planning a special function/conference, a biker/cyclists breakfast or break away into the valley, Padlangs and Die Grand have a lot to offer and would love to accommodate you.
