The Second Summer Holiday with Penguins

BY SUPPLIED - DECEMBER 17, 2015

Holiday goers are in for some feathered fun as SANCCOB (the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) Eastern Cape is hosting their second ‘Penguin Holiday Festival’ from 20-29 December 2015 in the Greater St Francis area.

The 10-day festival will include events and activities for the whole family: their third Penguin Charity Golf Day, two public penguin releases, shows by renowned Koos Kombuis, Wendy Oldfield and Gerald Clark and band; a Penguin Open Air Cinema, full-moon beach walk, beach smash-ball tournament, a kids holiday programme, penguin art exhibition fundraiser in the iconic Seal Point Lighthouse, and private tours at the SANCCOB seabird Rehabilitation centre next to the lighthouse.

Thanks to all the exposure in print, radio and television, last year SANCCOB’s centre, situated next to the iconic Seal Point Lighthouse, received  over 5000 visitors during the December holiday. With more than 300 visitors each day, over the Christmas period, we had to offer our guided private tours over three slots daily.  This year we’e offering holiday-makers even more opportunies to have a penguin experience”, said Louanne Mostert, Marketing & Development Coordinator at SANCCOB Eastern Cape.

The Penguin Festival will kick off with a public penguin release of African penguins rehabilitated at SANCCOB, coupled with the opportunity to ADOPT the penguins being released. Throughout the festival young and old holiday-makers will be reminded about the threats facing penguins and other seabirds and the ocean and what they can do to help.

We would like to invite everyone to take part in the events we will be hosting over the course of the ten days.  Not only will young and old be entertained, but everyone will enjoy the opportunity to learn more about the charismatic African penguin and to directly support SANCCOB and the world-renowned work we do 365-days of the year.  Come join SANCCOB and festival partners for a first of its kind Penguin Christmas.”
