The Zwartkops Rowing Regatta
After spending a few sessions with the OA Olympians, St Andrews College rowing club got off to a great start at what was a regatta more suited to sailing due to the wind. St Andrew’s was represented in most events at the Zwartkops River and took top honours. Events where run as 3km time trial and 5.4 km for the first eight.
The U15 squad took Gold in the A Octuple, C Quad and a record breaking win by 2.4 minutes in the A quad of Thomas, Mouritzen, Zahn, and Southern coxed by McKay. Silver and Bronze in the A Single Sculls, and repeated in the A double Sculls.
The U16 squad had their first race in the sweep boats and started their season with class. Gold was seen in William Counsel who took the A single Scull and more Gold followed quickly after with Gold in the A and B Pairs, A coxed Four and B coxed four and A Eight
The opens continued to show St Andrew’s College dominance with Gold and Silver in the A pairs, and A Fours a strong victory for a young Second Eight, Bronze in the B sculls by Danial Coward.
Although running terribly late the first eight got off to a great start, rowing well in the conditions that were thrown at them. The finished 41 seconds ahead of Selborne and a minute over grey, taking gold in the Men’s open eight.
These performances augur well for the Knysna Heads Regatta over half-term and the exciting tour to Boston to take part in the hugely popular Head of the Charles Regatta, which should provide that group with wonderful exposure and experience.
