'Those found guilty must be jailed' Trollip reacts to arrest of Cheeky Watson and co over IPTS corruption

Disgraced former Eastern Cape Rugby boss, Cheeky Watson, and three other co-accused - Nadia Gerwel, Mandisi Mkaza and Joeleen Andrea Wessels, are expected back in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday following a brief court appearance on Friday.

Gerwel is a former Nelson Mandela Bay senior finance official.

The court granted them R2 000 bail each after they arrested by the Hawks on Friday morning over alleged fraud and corruption relating to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's failed Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS).

Over R2 billion meant for the roll out of the Metro's IPTS is believed to have been wasted or squandered.

Watson and his co-accused face 43 counts that include theft, fraud, corruption, money laundering and forgery after they allegedly pocketed around R12 million from the IPTS.

It is understood the Hawks are still looking for another suspect, who is believed to be currently in Cape Town.

Reacting to the news, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, Tweeted; "Justice must be served for the squandering of R2.5 billion on the metro's failed IPTS. Those found guilty must be jailed."
