Three behind bars after VW Polo hijacking goes wrong

KwaNobuhle police have arrested three suspects in connection with the hijacking of a vehicle in Fan Park on Monday.

Speaking in a statement, police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said four suspects stopped a black Volkswagen Polo, before luring the male driver and his female passenger out of the vehicle.

Nkohli said the suspects then tied the occupants up with a piece of rope before raping the woman and driving to a deserted area, where the victims were thrown into an empty dam.

“The male victim managed to loosen himself and alerted the police. After the vehicle circulation, Despatch police spotted it driving down San Souci Road and gave chase. The driver then lost control and [the vehicle] overturned, while one suspect was thrown out of the window. A second suspect was still inside and a third was arrested trying to flee on foot,” Nkohli said.

The latest incident comes after two similar hijackings involving Polo’s took place in KwaNobuhle and KwaDwesi last week, which lead to arrest of a 27-year old man while he was filling one of the stolen vehicles at a William Moffett petrol station.

Nkohli said police are still searching for the fourth suspect while his three accomplices appeared in the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s Court earlier today on charges of rape and carjacking.
