Three-day Thongathi (Tongaat) Mall Structural Collapse Commission of Inquiry session scheduled for tomorrow cancelled


The three-day penultimate session of the Department of Labour-appointed Commission of Inquiry into the structural collapse of the Thongathi Mall that was scheduled to start tomorrow has been cancelled until further notice.

Department of Labour Deputy Director: Civil and Construction Sector, Phumi Maphaha who chairs the Inquiry was this weekend admitted to hospital due to a severe tonsillitis inflammation.

The Department of Labour wishes to profusely apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused. The new date will be communicated in due course.

Expected to take a stand this week was the Mall’s contractor, and Chief Executive of Gralio Contractor Precast (Pty) Ltd Jay Singh.   

The Thongathi Mall Commission of Inquiry was appointed following the structural collapse of the Mall that led to the death of two workers and injury to 29. The Section 32 hearing, was instituted by the Department of Labour in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act - to gather evidence on negligence that may have resulted in occupational injuries and death of workers.

The Thongathi Mall structural collapse took place on 19 November 2013. The Commission of Inquiry started its work of gathering evidence on 11 February 2014.
