DECEMBER 10, 2014

Three hospital patients were reportedly killed on Tuesday evening and four others were injured after the ambulance they were travelling in overturned on the N2 highway near Mthatha, the Eastern Cape Department of Health said.

A woman and her two young children died at around 7pm at the scene of the accident, Eastern Cape Department of Health Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said.

The three, including two other patients, were being transferred from the Nelson Mandela Central Hospital in Mthatha to the St Patrick’s District Hospital in Bizana when their ambulance overturned.

The other two patients as well as two emergency services crew members were injured in the same accident and taken to the Madzikane Ka Zulu Memorial Hospital in Mount Frere for further treatment.

Kupelo could not give details on the extent of their injuries.

“The MEC sends heartfelt condolences to their family,” he said.

Kupelo said that the cause of the accident was unclear and police investigation were underway.

He, however, said that it was raining in the region and roads were wet.
