Three nabbed with fake Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones worth R230 500

Eastern Cape police say their members on Friday arrested three suspects with a huge stash of counterfeit smartphones.

"Middelburg K9 Unit arrested three suspects with 45 counterfeit Samsung Galaxy S5 cellphones - with a value of R230 500," the police said.

A huge demand for aspirational brands at bargain prices - especially in electronics and clothing, is fuelling an illicit market for counterfeit goods in South Africa as across the world. Most of these counterfeits are brought in from factories in China.

However, counterfeits drain profits from the legal economy, where government draws its revenues, and the counterfeit trade is often used by criminal syndicates to fund their operations.
