Three pointed star scoops up SA’s best quality new car
The Mercedes-Benz E-class has been voted South Africa’s best new quality car according to international market research company, Ipsos. Benz’s mid-sized sedan recorded an industry average figure of only 10 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), well above the industry standard of 40, which has remained constant since 2005.
Mercedes-Benz also locked out the remaining steps on the ‘podium’ with the C-class Coupe and petrol powered C-class sedan, finishing a combined second with 14 PP100. In addition, the German manufacturer’s East London plant was awarded gold and best motoring plant in South Africa with only 15 PP100, ahead of BMW's Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, (15 PP100) and Toyota's Prospecton plant near Durban (29 PP100).
Japanese car giant Mazda was awarded best passenger car manufacturer, achieving gold with 24 PP100 ahead of silver price winners Toyota (28 PP100 and Opel (29 PP100), with bronze going to Chevrolet (35 PP100), Ford (37 PP100) and Volkswagen (37 PP100).
Top prize in the recreational category went to the Audi Q7 (18 PP100) ahead of the Toyota FJ Cruiser (21 PP100) and Audi Q5 (21 PP100), while South Africa’ perineal best-selling vehicle, the Toyota Hilux, was award best light commercial vehicle (LCV), with the petrol powered single cab finishing ahead of his double cab sibling (18 PP100 and 25 P100 respectively). Third position went to the petrol powered single cab Ford Ranger with 27 PP100.
In addition, the Hilux also scored gold in four out of the five LCV categories for best petrol single and double cab, as well as best diesel single and double cab. In the ¾ LCV segment, the locally build Nissan NP200 and Chevrolet Utility both achieved gold status with 50 PP100 and 51 PP100 respectively.
