Thugs try their luck at initiation school
Three criminals got a taste of their own medicine after a robbery went wrong in a village outside Mthatha when they tried to rob the initiates at knifepoint during the early hours on Friday.
It is alleged that the suspects who are all believed to be in their 20s forced their way in at JJ Mkhefelele initiation school, which accommodates over 50 initiates in Kwavungwe Village in Zambane.
“They were arrogant and kicked open the door and demanded cash, tobacco, dagga and cellphones. But we had none of those things here,” one initiate told the Daily Dispatch.
“They threatened to kill us,” said another.
This ordeal took place as the Eastern Cape’s initiates death tolls are at a steady rate.
According to a third initiate, the group of young men got tired and decided to fight back and they overpowered the would-be robbers.
“We tied them with nylon strips and made them lie face-down and we beat the hell out of them,” he added.
“We have never heard of something like this and hope this will not happen again,” said King Sabata Dalindyebo Traditional Initiation Forum and monitoring team Chief Sakhumzi Tswina who was called to the scene at about 6am that day.
The police were called to the scene and the perpetrators were removed.
House of Traditional Leaders chairman in the province, Nkosi Ngangomhlaba Matanzima applauded the initiates for standing up to the thugs. “The initiates were defending their territory. This is their only home, so the intruders got what they deserved,” he said.
“I have beefed up my security and if come to a push i will have armed guards,” said the owner of the initiation school and veteran surgeon JJ Mkhefelele.
EC Provincial Health department Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo confirmed that four more initiates died across the province at the weekend, resulting to a total of 18 deaths from last month (June).
He highlighted that deaths were caused by a range of problems from botched circumcisions to extreme hydration and infections as some operations were done at illegal initiation schools.
