Thuli Madonsela is not a CIA agent - US ambassador Gaspard

BY TAI CHISHAKWE - SEPTEMBER 8, 2014

US ambassador to South Africa, Patrick Gaspard, on Monday said claims that South Africa’s Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is a CIA agent were “baseless” and “offensive”.

Gaspard tweeted that the US completely rejected the claims and will lodge a complaint with South Africa’s government.

“We categorically reject the baseless and offensive accusations from the Dep Min and will lodge complaint through Dip channels,” said the tweet.

“These comments are unfortunate but inconsequential since they lack all credibility to average SA who see through smoke screens.

“We're proud of our transparent partnership with SA on health, eco dev, peace and security. These are the issues that matter.”

He went on to ask; “How can a govt minister make such scurrilous and political comments at an official event?”

The government minister is Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Kebby Maphatsoe who, speaking at a tombstone unveiling of Umkhonto weSizwe combatant Linda "Lion of Tshiawelo" Jabane in Soweto on Saturday, reportedly said Madonsela was a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) plant because the US wants “their own CEO in South Africa.”

This was after Madonsela sent a letter to President Jacob Zuma asking him to give details on when was he going to respond to the recommendations in her report on his Nkandla homestead.

Madonsela said she would take legal action against Maphatsoe, asking him to retract and apologise, or "provide incontrovertible evidence" that she was an agent.
