Thunzi Bush Lodge, the perfect Valentine’s Day getaway

BY NATALI IVERSON - FEBRUARY 9, 2016

Exhausted from a busy festive season, I decided it would be a great idea for my boyfriend and I to escape the city for a weekend getaway somewhere peaceful and quiet. Thunzi Bush Lodge, well known for its tranquility, was ideal for our mini break.

Situated just 30km outside of Port Elizabeth, in the tranquil surroundings of the Maitland Nature Reserve, we checked into the comfort of our chalet just in time for breakfast.

Thanks to their newly updated menu, we enjoyed a delicious country-style breakfast basket on our chalet’s balcony, while happily, enjoying beautiful views of lush indigenous bush, valley and wetlands. Bliss!

Thunzi Bush Lodge has six comfortably furnished chalets. Our chalet was beautifully decorated and had all the amenities you would expect at a 4-Star lodge including an en-suite bathroom, DSTV, a seating area, air-conditioning, waffle-weaved dressing gowns and a well-equipped kitchen.

After unpacking our bags, our gourmet picnic lunch arrived, and we decided to try out their prepared picnic area.

This is something special. We found a blanket and pillows laid out alongside a short-legged table set with glasses, crockery, cutlery and serviettes in the sun dappled shade of a huge tree surrounded by indigenous forest and bird song. We basked in the afternoon warmth, and simply enjoyed each other’s company.

Our picnic basket contained a choice of hams, a potato salad, pickled onions and marinated olives, a selection of cheeses, smoked snoek pâté and an olive pâté, a mini vegetarian quiche, freshly-baked bread, and an apple crumble tart. We also ordered some wine, as we were informed that they now sell alcoholic beverages on site.

With our tummies stuffed, we strolled back to our chalet for a couples’ Swedish Full Body Massage, which we chose off of their spa treatment catalogue, and then spent the remainder of the day enjoying the lodge’s sparkling pool.

When evening came, we prepared a tasty braai at our private boma. While the fire crackled in the background, we dined and enjoyed the stars of the night sky before going to bed.

Sadly, we were to leave the next morning, but only after making plans to return!

Thunzi’s secret is that it offers a truly unique experience that will be enjoyed by anyone, especially romantic couples, wanting to spoil themselves with a quality getaway not too far from home. Other activities in the area include birdwatching, fishing and guided walks.
