Thyspunt construction set for 2017

BY CHARL BOSCH - MAY 26, 2015

The Department of Energy has announced that construction of the country’s first new nuclear power plant will take place at Thyspunt near Jeffreys Bay in 2017.

According to local publication Jbay News, the decision has however been met with stern opposition from local residents and organisations due to a reported unfinished Environmental Impact Assessments and the continuing financial problems at Eskom.

The R300-million plant, one of six planned, is said to have generating capacity of 4 000 megawatts but which can be upped to 8 000 megawatts. It is projected to come online in 2023.
