Today in History: Haiti earthquake

BY MATTHEW COLLINS - JANUARY 12, 2015

On this day, five-years ago, the infamous earthquake which shook the foundations of the Caribbean island nation of Haiti manifested itself.

The earthquake, which measured a colossal 7.0 on the Richter scale, is claimed to have taken the lives of an estimated 300 000 people.

After the tragedy had struck, international aid was everywhere to be found – with South Africa providing support to Haiti through donations as well as various specialists and professionals, such as search and rescue teams and medical doctors.

Of the 1.5 million Haitians displaced by the quake, BBC News reports that over 85 000 are still living in displacement camps.
