Toddler and man die after being struck by lightning in separate incidents in Dutywa

Dutywa Police have opened an inquest docket after a three-year-old girl was struck by lightning and died at Mhala Location, Old Idutywa Village, in Dutywa.

It is alleged that six children were in one hut on Wednesday, at about 16:00, at Mhala Location when the incident occurred.

“The three-year-old toddler died instantly, while the other two other children, ages not known, were also struck, but survived,” said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

He added that the children were rushed to Butterworth Hospital. 

In an unrelated incident, Ngqamakhwe police have opened an inquest docket after a 27-year-old man, who was looking after the cattle was struck to death by lightning also on Wednesday, at about 17:00, at Sihlabeni Location, Kotana Village, Ngqamakhwe.

“The shepard died instantly at the scene,” said police spokesperson, Captain Manatha.

He added that police are investigating.
