Tongo grilling continues

BY TAI CHISHAKWE - NOVEMBER 3, 2014

Shrien Dewani's lawyer is on Monday expected to spend the day painstakingly grilling state witness, Zola Tongo, when the British businessman and honeymoon murder accused’s trial resumes in the Western Cape High Court.

Tongo, regarded the state’s key witness, claims Dewani asked him to help arrange his wife, Anni Dewani's murder in November 2010 in Cape Town.

He has spent four days on the stand so far. During cross-examination last week, he alleged that Dewani offered him R5 000 and the promise of more business in return for recruiting hit men.

However, several aspects of this testimony contradict the sworn statement he gave to police in November 2010.

When confronted with the contradictions, Tongo admitted there were some mistakes in his statement.

Tongo also claimed he didn't know the woman he helped to kill was Dewani's wife until after the hit had been carried out. However, his co-conspirator told the court they knew who the target was earlier in the trial.

Dewani is standing trial for allegedly masterminding his wife’s death.
