'Toy gun' robbers expected in Butterworth Magistrate's court today

JULY 2, 2015

Two Butterworth men are expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court after they were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for 'armed' robbery with a toy gun.

According to Eastern Cape police, the two suspects aged 21 and 22, were arrested along Bell Street, Butterworth - moments after robbing a 35-year-old trader, who had just alighted from a Durban bus. The man had bought some clothes that he intended to sell in Butterworth.

The suspects then held him at 'gunpoint' and made off with the stock valued at R4 030.

Fortunately, the victim met with a patrolling Butterworth police van and told the officers that he has just been robbed. The police, with the assistance of the complainant, traced and arrested the suspects in Butterworth.

They recovered all the robbed items while to their surprise police also recovered a toy gun that was used in the robbery.

Still, both suspects have been charged with robbery with a 'firearm' and police believe they may have been linked to other robberies that have been reported around Butterworth.
