Transnet National Ports Authority: Two new super-tugboats coming to PE

AUGUST 28, 2014

Two new tugs, part of nine ordered by Transnet National Ports Authority, will replace “ageing vessels” and increase the fleet in Port Elizabeth.

Ports and Ships reports that the tugs are currently under construction at Durban-based South African Shipyards which won the R1.4 billion contract for the state-of-the-art tugboats.

According to TNPA Chief Harbour Master Rufus Lekala, the new tugs will be “the most powerful ever to enter TNPA’s service,” adding that they are also slightly longer than the existing ones.

TNPA CEO said at the start of construction that it was the “single biggest con-tract” awarded to a South African company.

He said the acquisition was “consistent with Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy to provide capacity ahead of demand”. - metrominutes
