Transport Deputy Minister to donate bicycles to Eastern Cape learners

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, together with the MEC for Transport and Safety in the Eastern Cape, Weziwe Tikana, are expected on Monday to donate a total of 100 bicycles to learners of Nobangile Senior Secondary School as part of the Shova Kalula Programme.

Deputy Minister and MEC will be joined by the Eastern Cape MEC of Education Mandla Makupula; the Mayor of Mbashe Local Municipality, Nonceba Olga Mfecane; Amathole District Municipality Mayor, Nomasikizi Konza, as well as national and senior government officials and other key stakeholders during the event.

Shova Kalula bicycle programme, which is a non-motorised transport system aimed at lightening the learners’ burden of having to travel or walk more than three kilometres to and from school daily and do not qualify for scholar transport in terms of policy provisions.

The Department introduced the Shova Kalula programme in 2005 with the objective being to provide a non-motorised form of transport for learners walking long distances to and from school, especially in rural communities.
