Trollip challenges Jordaan to public debate

BY CHARL BOSCH - APRIL 11, 2016

Democratic Alliance (DA) Eastern Cape leader, and Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate Athol Trollip, has taken aim at Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan’s reported decision to cancel his appearance on a national television debate later this week.

In a statement, Trollip said Jordaan’s sudden withdrawal from yet another important meeting has developed into a worrying trend, and one which again raises speculation as to whether he has something to hide.

“Broken promises are piling up under Mayor Jordaan's leadership and he is hiding from accountability,” Trollip said.

“The ANC is in turmoil in Nelson Mandela Bay as they are yet to officially announce their mayoral candidate or any of their councillor candidates for the 2016 local elections, having missed many of their own announcement deadlines”.

“As such, my offer to Mayor Jordaan remains; let’s debate service delivery and the fight against corruption. Let's give the people the opportunity to decide who they want to be their Mayor by holding a public debate”.

Last month, angry residents from Colchester blocked the main N2 highway leading to Port Elizabeth with burning tyres after the municipality cancelled its scheduled imbizo without any prior notice.
