TROUBLED WATERS Part 3: 100 objections to Algoa Bay Fish Farm

NOVEMBER 21, 2014

There have been more than 100 objections to the planned fish farm in Algoa Bay, Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism MEC Sakhumzi Somyo has told the Bhisho Legislature.

Replying to a question from the Democratic Alliance's (DA) Ross Purdon, the MEC said the issuing of environmental authorisation for an Aquaculture Development Zone (ADZ) in Algoa Bay was not a provincial competence, adding: “I can’t stand here and speak on behalf of the minister”.

The MEC said questions should be addressed to the National Department of Environmental Affairs adding that he was prepared to assist in this regard.

Purdon wanted to know “whether due process” had been followed with regard to consultation before environmental authorisation was granted. - metrominutes
