Twitter users get to AskTrollip on anything as he opens up to voters

SEPTEMBER 22, 2015

South Africans on the social media site, Twitter, who were not necessarily Nelson Mandela Bay residents, spend lunchtime on Tuesday learning more about the Democratic Alliance's (DA) Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Candidate in the 2016 Local Government Elections, Athol Trollip, during his hour-long 'Twitter Town Hall' session on the site.

This strategy follows the success of the the AskMmusi chat session early in the year and was evidently a way for Trollip to connect with the younger and social media savvy generation, who will most likely swing the poll in the DA's favour if they were to vote for the party.

Using the hashtag, AskAthol, users asked questions ranging from his vision for the Metro, his ethics, policy and governance, while others, as might have been expected, asked him general  humor questions like "who will win the lotto" and "what happened to Mark Williams' voice?"

Trollip, whose Twitter handle is @AtholT, tried to answer every question.

The 'Twitter Town Hall' session seems to have been a success as the #Askathol hashtag contnued to trend even after the Twitter Town Hall had closed its doors.

Two Saturdays ago, Trollip and Maimane officially launched the DA's bid for the Nelson Mandela Bay Mayorship at a well-attended event.

Trollip has also endeavoured to visit all 60 Wards of the Nelson Mandela Bay in 60 days to connect with residents.

He began in KwaZakhele.
