Two abalone poachers expected in Grahamstown court today

Two suspects are expected in court in Grahamstown on Tuesday after they were arrested on Friday for abalone poaching.

"At 17:30, Grahamstown K9 Lieutenant Erasmus and Warrant Officer Neethling followed up on information of abalone poachers from Port Elizabeth coming through to dive near Kleinemonde," Eastern Cape police said in a statement.

"The members patrolled on foot with police dog Bonzo and discovered diving gear and abalone in packets.

"Two suspects attempted to escape but was apprehended by police dog Bongo."

Diving gear valued at an estimated R40 000 and 339 (86kg) wet abalone valued at R51 600 was siezed.
