Two guards killed and an undisclosed amount of cash stolen in Free State tavern robberies

Three unknown males shot and killed two security guards in Thaba Nchu, in the Free State, and robbed the tavern owner of an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to police spokesperson, Constable Peter Kareli; "On the 03 March, at about 23:30, the tavern owner in Ramakgari Section was waiting for patrons to leave the tavern so he can prepare to close for the night. Three unknown males, who were sitting in the tavern waited till everyone was out and took out firearms.

"The two security guards working at the tavern tried to run away but the suspects fired at them fatally wounding one in the head and the other in the back."

The suspects proceeded to the house demanding cash from the owner.  The 50 year-old female tavern owner was shot in the left hand and abdomen and her 64 year-old husband was shot in the right foot.

"The suspects managed to get their hands on an undisclosed amount of cash after which they fled on foot. 

"The female tavern owner and her husband were rushed to hospital in critical condition," said Const Kareli. 

"Thaba Nchu Police is investigating 2 cases of murder and two others of attempted murder and robbery. No one has been arrested yet."

A few moments earlier, at about 22:30, on the 03 March 2016, three unknown armed males had surprised another tavern owner in the area and pushed him into the house at gun point. 

"The victim and his wife’s hands were tied up with a rope in one of the bedrooms. The suspects demanded the keys to the safe and took an undisclosed amount of cash and a Cell phone.  No one was injured in this incident and Selosesha police are investigating a case of armed robbery," said Const Kareli.
