Two injury blows for Springboks

Vodacom Blue Bulls Tighthead prop, Marcel van der Merwe, will not be joining the Springboks for their 2014 end of year rugby tests in Europe, after sustaining a knee injury.

Van der Merwe was injured during his side Currie Cup semi-final defeat against the DHL Western Province Stormers last weekend and will be side-lined for up to six weeks.

“He fell awkwardly in the last few minutes of the game,” Blue Bulls doctor, Org Strauss said.

“He has a Grade 2 medial ligament tear, luckily not the same knee that has given him problems in the past.

Saracens hooker, Schalk Brits, has also been ruled out of the Euro tour after he injured his knee during Saturday’s game against Clermont Auvergne.

"Schalk is due to have surgery and will then commence rehabilitation with the club's medical staff," head of medicine Joe Collins said on the club website.

"Brits is not expected to return until well into the new year."

The Springboks will play test matches against Ireland on the 8th of November, England on the 15th of November, Italy on the 22nd of November and Wales on the 29th of November.
