Two Mandela Bay Ports Handled 1.618 Million Tonnes of Cargo in December

The two Nelson Mandela Bay ports of Port Elizabeth and Ngqura handled a total of 1.618 million tonnes of cargo in December last year, compared with 1.580 million tonnes in the same month of 2013, according to figures made available by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

The figures show that the Port of Port Elizabeth handled 947 000 tons of cargo in December (1.007 million in December 2013), while Ngqura handled 671 000 (573 000) and East London 233 000 (285 000).

The Port of Ngqura handled 49 731 TEUs (42 385), which was the third highest after Durban (233 054) and Cape Town (69 025).

Ngqura is being positioned by TNPA as the container transhipment hub for Southern Africa.

Port Elizabeth handled 17 866 (TEUs (15 801) and East London 4 246 (2 133). - MetroMinutes.
