Centane police have opened an inquest docket after a rondavel hut caught fire and a two-year-old girl was burnt to death on Friday, at about 23:30, at Mazeppa Location, Gcina Village, Centane.

It is alleged that the mother of the three girls was alerted by community members that her hut was on fire.

According to the police, the mother was sleeping in a different house and the father of the children was away attending funeral at Willowvale.

“The mother managed to rescue two girls, aged between 9 and 13 years-old, but unfortunately a two-year old toddler was burnt to death,” said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

He added that the rescued girls have been admitted at Tafalofefe Hospital, Centane, and Frere Hospital in East London.

The cause of the fire is not known, but police are investigating.
