UDDI to host major science and technology conference

NOVEMBER 14, 2014

The Uitenhage-Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) has been selected to host the 16th Southern African Association of Science and Technology Centres Conference (SAASTEC) next week.

The three-day conference will be held at UDDI’s R30-million Science and Technology Centre under the theme of “Science Centres: Lighting up the way”.

The UDDI says that more than 180 delegates have confirmed their attendance making the conference the biggest to date as it will have the highest number of papers submitted.

Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre Curriculum and Education Officer Chris McCartney, says being awarded the honour of hosting the conference “speaks volumes” for the innovative features at the Uitenhage centre.

These include 3 800 square metres of interactive exhibition space divided into seven zones focusing on specific areas such as automotive, electricity and life science.

McCartney describes the event as being “a significant milestone” for the UDDI and the metro “which is actively promoting science and technology as one of its strategic focus areas”.

He said the conference would have an economic impact on the metro as a number of services, such as catering, had been outsourced.

He added that representatives from 20 local schools in disadvantaged communities had been invited to participate in workshops during the event. - metrominutes
