Uitenhage police arrest 243 suspects for various crimes over the weekend

Uitenhage police arrested a total of 243 suspects during crime prevention operations conducted in the town over the past weekend.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes that include murder, attempted rape, robbery, and rape, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and the possession of suspected stolen goods, while 10 people were arrested for drunken driving.  

“A total of 29 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R14 500. Several suspects were also arrested on charges relating to violating protection orders; malicious damage to property; and shoplifting. Twenty-two suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs,” said police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart. 

She added that police in the Uitenhage police will continue with their efforts to combat crime effectively in the area.

The police also appealed to the local community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property. 

“Let us share information and support each other in the fight against crime,” said Captain Swart.
