Uitenhage police acted swiftly on Sunday night and arrested three alleged hijackers within minutes after they allegedly committed the crime in Kamesh.

According to the statement, a 57 year-old male victim and two of his female friends were sitting in vehicle in Eagle Drive, Mountain View, Kamesh, at about 23:30 on Sunday, when they were approached by three unknown males.

“One of the suspects took out a bottle neck and threatened the victim and ordered him and his friends to get out of the vehicle. The three suspects jumped into the Toyota Conquest and sped off with it in the direction of Uitenhage,” said Uitenhage police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

She added that police were immediately informed to what had happened and a description of the vehicle was circulated to all police stations in the area.

“Members from Uitenhage SAPS, who were busy patrolling Caledon Street, Uitenhage, spotted the vehicle and immediately gave chase.

"Members apprehended the trio in Caledon Street, within minutes after the incident occurred,” said Captain Swart.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 25 years-old, will appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of car hijacking.
