Uitenhage War Memorial defaced yet again

BY CHARL BOSCH - JUNE 23, 2015

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has condemned the latest act of monument vandalising after the Uitenhage War Memorial was found covered in white paint late yesterday afternoon.

In April, the memorial, along with bust of Queen Victoria in front of the Port Elizabeth library and the Horse Memorial on the corner of Cape and Russel Road, were defaced in a series of attacks on Anglo Boer War and Apartheid era monuments attributed to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The party has however reportedly distanced itself from the latest attack.

“I have an open door to anyone who wishes to discuss areas of heritage, arts and culture. No one has to resort to the defacing of any memorial sites for any reason. Anyone caught and found to be breaking the law will be dealt with in terms of the criminal justice system,” Youth, Arts & Culture Mayoral Committee Member Andiswa Mama said in a statement.

A case of malicious damage to property has been opened with no arrests having yet been made.
