Uitenhage War Memorial defacing: Two suspects arrested

Uitenhage police have arrested two women in connection of the second defacing of the town’s Boer War Memorial in Market Square earlier this week.

In a statement, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart confirmed that the suspects, believed to be in their early thirties and residing in the town, were taken into custody late yesterday afternoon following a tipoff.

They are expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on a charge malicious damage to property after the statue, which was vandalised in a series of attacks on Anglo Boer War and Apartheid era monuments blamed on the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in April, was found covered in white paint on Monday. The party has however reportedly denied responsibility for the attack.
